Womens Sewing Centres and Self Help Groups
It was recognised at an early stage that empowerment of the women of the Villages would be helpful to giving them the opportunity to progress, not only for themselves but also for their children. Most of the women are illiterate and the Health programme in target villages is designed to improve their general health and welfare using group training sessions with pictograms to help get the message over.
In Kanjiar, one of the larger villages, it was decided to set up a Sewing School to assist this empowerment process. To date some 50 women have received training over the years and there are 8 sewing machines being used now to help the present group.
There were 18 in this group in 2005, and they take it in turns to learn on the machines after they have been taught the correct principles of hand sewing. As ever, the work is limited by the fund.......view more

In 2002, a project was started with the objective of helping the many children who had 'adopted' the Gay Junction Railway station as their home! Most of these children were either orphans with no known relatives, had run away from a hopeless situation at home, or had simply been abandoned by their relatives because they could no longer look after them. The ages varied from 5 to 15, and the kids made a 'living' from begging, stealing or selling anything they could get their hands on.
After building the relationship between the children, the local police and the railway authorities over these last years, a school and 'drop in' centre was established in a nearby rented building. However, this proved inadequate and we needed a proper building which could also provide secure shelter for the children at night. The health project
The Health project works in 12 villages working with mainly women and young mothers in the field of preventative health care. Surveys have shown this project is achieving a great improvement in the health of local children and young mothers paticulary. The project is collabrating technically with UNICEF Patna in helping to develop the Intergrated Management of Neo Natal and Childhood illnesses (IMNCHI) model of child health across the district. Project staff are UNICEF approved state level trainers.
