Children of Gaya junction railway station
In 2002, a project was started with the objective of helping the many children who had 'adopted' the Gay Junction Railway station as their home! Most of these children were either orphans with no known relatives, had run away from a hopeless situation at home, or had simply been abandoned by their relatives because they could no longer look after them. The ages varied from 5 to 15, and the kids made a 'living' from begging, stealing or selling anything they could get their hands on.

After building the relationship between the children, the local police and the railway authorities over these last years, a school and 'drop in' centre was established in a nearby rented building. However, this proved inadequate and we needed a proper building which could also provide secure shelter for the children at night. With the great assistance again of the Karuna Trust, a building has now been purchased which will provide shelter, schooling and advice for these needy children. It is hoped to be able to help all the children currently living on the railway station, about 50 in total of all ages, girls as well as boys.
